Finding the Perfect Fit: Joining Civitan

Jeff joined the Triangle Young Professionals Civitan in January 2020, just months before the world drastically changed due to the pandemic. Initially attending a different Civitan meeting in December 2019, Jeff kept hearing about a dynamic group of young professionals doing incredible projects and social events. Intrigued, Jeff checked us out—and the rest is history.

Although the early days of his membership coincided with lockdowns, monthly Zoom meetings provided a sense of connection and purpose. Not one to sit on the sidelines, Jeff quickly got involved, taking on the role of District Newsletter Editor, and, alongside the District Website Editor, Jeff’s wife Kathy, won global recognition for their work. Even in a challenging time, Civitan clubs found creative ways to serve their communities, reinforcing their passion for making a difference.

Serving with Purpose

For Jeff, Civitan is about giving back while having a great time! He is both an attorney and business owner and he often sees many professionals get lost in the pursuit of money. Jeff believes that service projects, from spreading mulch in parks to packing food at local food banks, offer a way to stay grounded and engaged in the community.

Among the many impactful volunteer opportunities, the Carolina Tiger Rescue project stands out as a favorite for Jeff. Not only does it involve hands-on outdoor work, but it supports a cause close his heart—providing a haven for big cats that have suffered mistreatment. Knowing the club’s efforts contribute to improving the lives of these incredible animals makes the hard work even more rewarding.

Memorable Moments & Lasting Impact

Beyond service projects, the Durham Bulls baseball socials have become a highlight of Jeff’s Civitan experience. These outings, held multiple times a season, provide a chance to unwind, enjoy America’s pastime, and build friendships with fellow members. The camaraderie at these games is a reminder that volunteering is just as much about community as it is about service.

What is Jeff proud of during his time as a member? It isn’t one specific thing. It’s knowing that we never realize just how much of an impact we can have one someone else’s life. We do a lot of work in the community, from Habitat for Humanity builds, to the Raleigh and Durham Food Banks, to working with the Durham Women’s Shelter. Jeff said it best, "We aren’t ever going to know how a few hours of our volunteer work can dramatically change someone’s life. So, I’m proud of all the events we do, even the ones I’m not at."

The Tradition of Marsocci Meatballs

If you’ve ever been invited to Marsocci Meatballs, you know it’s an event unlike any other! For Jeff, cooking a feast of homemade Italian food isn’t just about delicious meals—it’s about tradition, community, and bringing people together. This tradition was passed down by Jeff’s grandfather and while this annual event started before Jeff joined Civitan, it has since become a beloved tradition for the Triangle Young Professionals Civitan Club. Since December 2020, members have gathered to enjoy incredible food and even better company, and the tradition is set to continue for years to come.

Why Civitan? Why Now?

Reflecting on his time in the club, Jeff believes that Civitan isn’t just about service—it’s about connection, impact, and making lifelong memories. Whether it's hammering nails at a Habitat for Humanity build, sorting potatoes at a food bank, or simply enjoying a baseball game, each moment is part of something bigger. And that’s what keeps him coming back, year after year.

Jeff’s dedication, leadership, and passion for service embody everything we stand for as an organization. He reminds us that giving back isn’t just about the work—it’s about the connections we build and the lives we touch along the way.

Jeff, thank you for your unwavering commitment to Civitan and our community. Your impact is felt far and wide, and we are grateful for all that you do!
